Romania to host a high-power laser, an investment with European funds

Minister of Education Daniel Funeriu announced on Wednesday that Romania will host in Magurele, close to Bucharest, a high-power laser, a project representing an investment of 280 million lei from European funds, and whose construction was approved by the Executive .
Today we have approved a note on the construction at Magurele, Ilfov County, of the Extreme Light Infrastructure Nuclear Physics facility, for research in the field of laser and the nuclear physics, in the framework of the European research infrastructure dedicated to extreme light. Basically, it is a very important step forward in the construction of this laser infrastructure, which is the largest scientific research project ever conducted in Romania', Funeriu highlighted.

According to the Minister, the hosting of the respective laser at Magurele does not suppose the existence of any danger, and the actual completion is envisaged in a five-year period.

Every time when a new facility is constructed, it can have a very large array of uses. Today, we can not say with certainty that this laser can be used, or will be used to neutralize the nuclear waste. This laser will be used exclusively for research and if scientific research will lead to the conclusion that it could be used otherwise, at that moment we will have to take a decision to this end', said Funeriu, asked if the laser will be also used to neutralize nuclear waste.
